Meaning
This hadith highlights the concept of *husn al-khatimah* (a good ending) and divine grace (*tawfiq*). The phrase "puts him in action" (literally "employs him") means that when Allah wishes divine favor and eternal success for a person, He opens doors for them to perform sincere, righteous deeds as they approach the end of their life. Rather than leaving a person stagnant or distracted by worldly matters, Allah guides them to actions that earn His pleasure, allowing them to pass away in a state of obedience and worship.
Context
The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) companions often asked for clarification when he used subtle or unique expressions. In this instance, the word used for "puts him in action" (*yasta'miluhu*) sparked curiosity, prompting them to ask how Allah "employs" a human being.
Classical scholars, such as Al-Mubarakpuri in his commentary on *Jami' at-Tirmidhi*, explain that this hadith emphasizes that ultimate success is determined by how one finishes their life. Mainstream Sunni scholarship views this as a reminder that human righteousness is always dependent on Allah granting the ability and inclination to do good. It also teaches that true success is not measured merely by worldly wealth or status, but by spiritual productivity and dying upon faith.
Living it today
• Pray for a Good Ending: Make it a daily habit to ask Allah for *husn al-khatimah* (a good ending) and for the grace to remain consistent in good deeds until your last breath.
• Seek Spiritual Productivity: Reframe your view of success. Strive to be "employed" by Allah by actively engaging in worship, helping others, maintaining good character, and serving your community.
• Avoid Complacency: The hadith serves as a gentle warning not to rely solely on past good deeds. Spiritual effort requires continuous renewal, regardless of one's age or current state in life.
